Reduced performance difference between sexes in master mountain and city marathon running The development of performance for so-called Master Runners has been studied in the area of Marathon only for city marathons. We now compared the performance of older runners at a city marathon (Lausanne Marathon) and a mountain marathon (Virgin Marathon) between 2000 and 2011. In both competitions were most participants between 35-44 years old. In the Virgin Marathon, the number of women took over 35 years to leaving the number of women under 35 years. For men there was no change over the years. In the Lausanne Marathon, on the other hand, no change in women during men decreased the number of finishers in the age groups of 25-44 years.Women in Lausanne Marathon improved performance in the age groups 35-44 and 55-64 years, men improved in the age groups 45-54 years in both marathons. Women were able to reduce the difference between the sexes in the age groups for 45-54 years in both marathons as well as in the age groups 35-44 years in the Virgin Marathon.

In the bottom line, women in the age groups were able to reduce the difference between the sexes in both the mountain marathon as in the city marathon for 35-54 years. The whole study can be found under https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23637550/
