Performance of Kenyan athletes in mountain versus flat marathon running - An example in Switzerland It is well known that runners from East Africa like Kenya achieve the fastest marathon times.We have now examined how Kenyans beat on a mountain marathon. From the Virgin Marathon and the Zurich Marathon we searched the best runners for nationality from the years 2003 to 2011.In the Virgin Marathon, the Kenyans came to the 11 among men in Nationranking. Place with 199 ± 23min followed by runners from Italy (177 ± 1min), Switzerland (179 ± 0min), France (186 ± 5min), England (189 ± 3min), Mexico (189 ± 3min), Germany (192 ± 5min), Czech Republic (195 ± 13min), Morocco (195 ± 7min), USA (196 ± 6min) and Hungary (198 ± 8min).Amazingly, no women from Kenya at the Virgin Marathon participated. At Zurich Marathon, the fastest Kenyans in Nationranking reached the 3rd place with 130 ± 1min behind runners from Switzerland with 129 ± 1min.At the women, Kenyans came to rank 5 with 158 ± 49, behind runners from Russia (153 ± 2min), Ethiopia (154 ± 2min), Switzerland (155 ± 2min) and Poland (155 ± 4min).
