Master runners dominate 24-h ultramarathons worldwide — a retrospective data analysis from 1998 to 2011 The analysis of individual races or a series of races showed for ultramarathons that the increase in the participants was due to an increase in master runners (> 35 years) and to women. However, the analysis of individual races could not be reliable for a trend, so we examined the global trend for 24-hour runners.
In the period 1998 to 2011 showed that the fastest runners were consistently older than 40 years. When examining the development in the age groups, women improved the runners of ages 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 55-59 and 60-64 years. The men improved the runners in the age groups 25-29, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59 and 60-64 years. In the other age groups, the performance remained unchanged, in no age group it came to a deterioration of the performance.
