Women achieve peak freestyle swim speed at earlier ages than men We examined the age of the best swimming performance for freestyle. For men, for 100 m and 200 m, the fastest times were 22-23 years, for 400 meters and 800 m with 24-24 years and for 50 m and 1500 m at 26-27 years.
For women, the best times were achieved with 20-21 years for all routes except 800 m, there was the age of the best performance at 26-27 years. With increasing route length, the difference between the sexes decreased with 13.1 ± 1.3% for 50 m, 13.2 ± 0.9% for 100 m, 10.8 ± 0.9% for 200 m, 7.9 ± 1.3% for 400 m and 4.2 ± 2.0% for 800m. For 1500 m, however, the difference increased again to 6.4 ± 2.3%.
